Receiving and Sending E-mail


6-1. Receiving e-mail

To check mail box in the server, click the 'Receive' button in the Mail Manager window.
If you have got new mail, Arrive View is automatically selected and new messages will be listed in the Mail list field.

Magellan looks up one after another all of your e-mail accounts checked in the Account setting window.


   How to check mail only on specific mail account


You can check specific mail account only.

Click Receive button pressing Control key or Click and Hold Receive button.

With either of above operation, account list will pop-up. Select any of them you want to check email.







6-2. Arrival of new e-mail

When you have got new mails, you can see all the list of them in the Arrive View. Then Read mail will move to 'Receive View' or other Views you have created, Unread mail will move to 'Unread View.'

If the new mail has Attachment file, Magellan notices you 'This message has Attachment file.' and the save dialog appears. You can select destination or save it later.

If you don't have to extract Attachment file now, click the Cancel button. You can extract it later. cf.6-6 






6-3. Reading Received e-mail

Mail Manager shows the e-mail body in the field, when you select in the mail list window.
With space key or Enter key, you can scroll the e-mail body and even read next message of the selected View.

TIPS Text direction of received mail
If mail message includes Hebrew, Arabic or Persian, text direction becomes Right to left automatically. You can also switch direction with Command+I.




6-4. Opening the Received mail window

Double-clicking the received e-mail in the mail list, the Mail window will open. Full header of e-mail and e-mail body is shown in this window.



 



Any time you open the Mail window, you can extract Attachment file again and again, unless you click the Remove button. Remove button removes only attachment file, not e-mail itself.

When you click the Add button, the sender will be stored in the Address book.

If there is a string begins with 'http://www...' in the e-mail body, the URL address will show with blue letter. Double-clicking the URL address, web-browser will start to take you to the URL address.


At the right upper in the Received mail window, there is Language pop-up menu. If the e-mail contains garbage characters, Magellan suit the font to the language.






6-5. Replying to received e-mail

You can reply to the selected e-mail in the Mail Manager window by clicking the Reply button.


If 'All message' is selected in the Send Preference, the original message will be shown with the '>' and 'Re:' or 'Fw:' is added to the original subject in the New Mail window. As the sender's e-mail address is also shown in the New Mail window, you can send reply message fast.

You can paste any text in the clipboard with '>'. Select the 'Paste with quote' in the edit menu.

You can select whether original message is shown in your reply message in the Send preference window, and you can invert the setting temporarily with following operation.

Reply message preference:
Click on reply button pressing Shift key.

In the same way, you can invert reply to whom preference temporarily.

Reply to whom preference:
Click on Reply button pressing Option key.






6-6.  Forwarding received email

You can forward the selected e-mail by clicking the Forward button in the Mail Manager window.

Clicking the Forward button, the original message will be shown in the New Mail window with blank To: line. Select the receiver's e-mail address in the Pop-up menu or type it directly. Handling of original message is same as replying.

Click Forward button pressing control key or click and hold the button, and the address list will pop-up. You can easily forward email to your friend.



TIPS Forwarding attachment
 
You cannot forward attachment which has not extracted yet.
This is a specification. In order not to forward virus or any infected file, Magellan prohibits forwarding attachment before you confirm its contents.

You can forward received attachment which has extracted once.
If you do not have to forward attachment, delete it before you send.





6-7. Attachment file of Received e-mail

If Received e-mail has attachment file, you can extract Attachment again and again at anytime.

Only when the e-mail has Attachment file, the extract and delete button as the left figure will appear.
Click the Extract button and the Save dialog will open. Select the destination you want to extract Attachment. You can also extract by drag and drop.
"Extract" and "Show" The "Extract" button will extract attachment file and save it to its destination. The "Show" button will open the attachment and show it. You can also show it by double-clicking attachment file.
Deletion If the Attachment is not necessary anymore, you can remove the Attachment file only. Once you click this remove button, the file is lost forever.
Status of Attachment










If e-mail message has multiple attachment files, you can extract each file separately. Magellan indicates status of attachment file by color.

Black : It has already extracted and remains at the same place.
Gray : It has not extracted yet, or it does not exist any more at previous destination.
Red : It has already deleted from e-mail message.
Magenta : It has received older version of Magellan.


Once attachment is extracted and saved, attribute and size will be indicated in the attachment field.

You can extract attachment file by following ways:

Select attachment and click the "Extract" button.

Select attachment and click the "Show" button.
Double-click the attachment.
Drag and drop onto the Desk top or into folder.

Select attachment and click the "Show" button or double-click the selected attachment, you can open it. For example, if it is a picture taken by digital camera, you can see it directly.
Notice Even Attachment has been removed, mail icon will not be changed. Because information that e-mail was received with Attachment in the past will not be lost.





6-8. Exporting e-mail

You can save e-mail as a text file.
To export From/To, Date, Subject and Body of an e-mail, when the Mail Body is indicated in the Mail Manager window, select 'Export' from the file menu.

You can export text or source of Received e-mail.
Open the Receive mail window and select 'Export' from the file menu. If you select 'text' in the save dialog, it will export as the same format as the Mail body field in the Mail Manager shows. If you select 'source', all original header will be included.





6-9. Skip Mail


If you select 'Skip mail' in the preference, Magellan will skip larger mail than you have selected.

Select the e-mail size you want Magellan to skip.



Skipping mail means that you will not download entire message but header only, it is also different from deleting e-mail. For example, you have 10 messages in the mailbox on the server, 5 messages out of them had Attachment file of 200 kbyte. What time will it take for you to download all?
You can receive 5 Attachment files later, even after receiving only other 5 messages that has no Attachments.
After receiving e-mail, the skipped e-mail is shown as the following shows, with red characters.

 




When you double-click the skipped e-mail, following dialog asking you what will you do with the e-mail will appear: see the original header only, receive entire message/Attachment, or delete it before you read.



 



Click Delete button:
Magellan will access to the mail server and delete it completely. As you will not be able to read message forever, you should be careful before clicking this button.       

Click Download button:
Magellan will access to the mail server and download entire message. After download has done, the e-mail will handle as the same way as other received e-mail.

Click the Open button:
Because only original header will be shown, you can see if the skipped message is spam or unnecessary e-mail. (Magellan will not access to the internet.) Before reading such e-mail, you can delete it by clicking the Delete button.




TIPS      Unavailable case of Skip mail
 
Skip mail is not available at all POP servers on the net.
In such case, Magellan will download entire message even the e-mail is larger than you have set up to Skip.
 
Notice After you have download e-mail which Magellan had once skipped by other e-mail client software, the Mail List window still shows it as Skipped mail. However, Magellan automatically handle it as a Read mail.
When Skipping mail, Magellan needs more memory. If you saw alert of 'out of memory', quit Magellan once. Then increase the 'Preferred size' of Memory info window of the Finder.






6-10. About HTML e-mail

HTML e-mail includes text style and color information. Generally, HTML message has demerits that not all e-mail client can indicate it or message size is increased. Magellan can show HTML e-mail by your web browser.
If received message has HTML part, the right end "Browser" button in the Mail Manager window is available.

Magellan can indicate HTML automatically even it includes image file. You do not have to save image files separately.


In the mail list of Mail Manager window, a small dot is added to HTML message at the left of date indication.

When HTML message is selected, "Browser" button is available.



To show HTML e-mail message, temporal cache file is created. In the Action setting in the Preference window, you can select empty HTML cache or not. If you see HTML e-mail often, check this box off.
